Mom, baby die during home delivery bid in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet district

RANIPET: A 31-year-old woman, who decided to give birth at her mother's house, died along with her newborn baby at Arcot town in Ranipet district on Thursday.

T Jothi's mother, Valli, 65, hid the baby in a bag in the house and took her daughter's body to Ranipet govt general hospital to enact a drama that she died at the hospital, police said.

Jothi, who died right after childbirth, is the wife of Tamilselvan, 38, from Salem. The couple got married nine years ago. She got pregnant for the fourth time and decided to deliver the baby at her mother's house.

The doctor and paramedical staff at Ranipet govt general hospital found that she had delivered the baby before dying. Hospital staff alerted police. A police team questioned Valli, who later admitted that she attempted to do a home delivery, but her daughter and grandchild died of complications.

Police recovered the body of the baby. Further investigation is on.
