Kadapa is one of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies located in Andhra Pradesh and falls under the General category. It comprises parts of YSR district.
The voting in Kadapa in the Lok Sabha election 2024 took place on May 13 in the fourth phase.
Y.S. Sharmila Reddyof Indian National Congress (INC), Yedugiri Sandinti Avinash Reddy of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Chadipirala Adi Narayana Reddy of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and others are among the key candidates contesting from Kadapa constituency in the General election 2024.
Congress chief YS Sharmila, daughter of former CM of undivided Andhra Pradesh YS Rajasekhar Reddy, who is trying her electoral luck for the first time, is pitted against sitting YSRCP MP and her cousin, YS Avinash Reddy.
The Pulivendula assembly segment, from where Andhra CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is contesting, is part of the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat. Sharmila is thus not only pitted againstAvinash but also her own brother, Jagan, indirectly.
In the Lok Sabha election 2019, Y S Avinash Reddy of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) won the seat with 7,77,967 votes (64.56% of the total votes). The runner-up was Adi Narayana Reddy Chadipirala of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) who secured 4,00,142 votes (33.21% of the total votes).
In the Lok Sabha election 2014, Y S Avinash Reddy of YSRCP won the seat with 6,65,491 votes (56.23% of the total votes). On the other hand, Srinivasa Reddy Reddeppagari of TDP secured the second position with 4,77,505 votes (40.35% of the total votes).
The literacy rate of the Lok Sabha constituency is 59.56%.
SC voters constitute approximately 16.1%, and ST voters constitute around 2% of the total voters based on the 2011 Census data.
Rural voters make up approximately 58.6% of the electorate, while urban voters constitute about 41.4%.
In the Lok Sabha election 2024, 79.57% voter turnout was recorded. The voter turnout in the Lok Sabha election 2019 was 78.68%.
The Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency, a bastion of the YS family for three decades now, is poised for a fierce poll battle between two members of the same family for the first time.
Key point: Siblings set to clash over YSR legacy
The election to Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency has turned into a sibling rivalry with YSRCP president and chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his sister YS Sharmila, who is the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, fighting to claim the legacy of their father and former chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy.
While YSRCP has renominated YS Avinash Reddy from Kadapa LS seat, Congress has named Sharmila from the constituency. Pulivendula assembly segment, from where Jagan is contesting for the state assembly, is one of the segments under Kadapa LS constituency. In other words, it’s going to be a direct fight for YSR’s legacy between Jagan and Sharmila.
Kadapa parliamentary constituency has remained a stronghold of the YSR family for 35 years since 1989.
