Summary / Analysis - Gringo

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
The movie begins with a precap, where we see the CEO Richard Rusk (Played by Joel Edgerton) being interrupted by his receptionist Mia (Played by Melonie Diaz) while having sex with his co-boss Elaine Markinson (Played by Charlize Theron) by a phone call.

Mia informs her that Harold is calling and he is not sounding good, so Richard answers to hear his friend and employee, Harold Soyinka (Played by David Oyelowo), crying for help, claiming he has been kidnapped in Mexico and that his kidnappers are demanding a ransom of $5 million.
Prelude, we go back two days earlier where Harold is getting ready to go to his office and having a conversation with his wife, he lives in Chicago and is married to Bonnie (Played by Thandie Newton). Later, Harold meets with his accountant, who tells him that because of Bonnie’s reckless spending, they are broke and he wants to take care of the situation and asks him to say something to his wife.


When he gets to work, Richard shouts at Harold for coming late to the office and calls him in the cabin and laughs at him, he says that “I can’t be lenient with you just because you are my friend our employees will feel wrong”, Richard then tells Harold that the two of them, plus Elaine, are going to be flying to Mexico to handle business involving a company merger, although Harold doesn't have any clue about the meeting.

He tries to ask about the meeting but then Richard makes an allusion to a study he read on a gorilla being fed carrots when he wants bananas as a means for Harold to be convinced to go through with this so he will eventually be rewarded by the company and he tells all the good work he has done for him, giving him a good job, good salary, letting her wife do the interior decoration and she totally screwed it, he informs that not to share any information about the meeting to anyone and mind his own business.



Meanwhile in the city there is a guitar shop run by Sunny (Played by Amanda Seyfried) and her boyfriend Miles (Played by Harry Treadaway). A friend of Miles, Nelly (Played by Paris Jackson), enters the shop to tell Miles that someone down in Mexico wants him to smuggle some drugs into the U.S.

Miles was scared to smuggle, but Nelly convinces him to do it by saying that he will get 20 grands for this work plus it’s a free trip to Mexico and he can take his girlfriend too. He agrees to it and decides to take Sunny along with him.

Later, Richard asks Harold to grab his bag as he won’t able to come to office and that they will directly meet at basketball match with their colleagues. Harold goes into Richard's office and finds a file on his computer that he copies to his own drive and leaves for the match.


Sunny and Miles arrive in Mexico. So does Harold, Richard, and Elaine, as they meet Angel (Played by Yul Vasquez), an old friend of Harold's. They go meet the branch manager named Celerino Sanchez (Played by Hernan Mendoza) and Roberto Vega(Played by Hector Kotsifakis) his right hand. Richard and Elaine enter his office while Harold and Roberto sit outside.

As Harold has no clue about anything and Richard doesn’t wants to share any illegal information with him. It turns out they have been selling their latest product to the Mexican cartel in order to get more money back, and now Promethium has decided to cut them off to avoid harming their merger and asks Celerino to cut the supplies and he says he can’t do so. Elaine says if you can have 35 children then you can deal with one dealer.


 Later on, the three have dinner, with Harold secretly recording what Richard and Elaine say about him when he walks away. Harold realizes that Richard is not his true friend and he teases about his wife’s weight, after they both leave he hears the recording.

At the hotel, he is having a Skype call with Bonnie where he is angry on Richard and opens the mini bar and after a while she admits to having an affair with him and that she plans to leave Harold. He attempts to get her to talk as he wanted to know with whom she is cheating on, but she hangs up.


 Meanwhile, as Miles maintains contact with his guy that wants to send the drugs back with him that is Roberto. At the same night Sanchez goes to meet with cartel leader Villegas, the Black Panther (Played by Carlos Corona). Sanchez tells Villegas about the problem and tells them getting cut off by Promethium, and after showing Villegas a picture of Harold, Sanchez informs them that Harold is not the boss other two Americans are the boss and he has no idea, but the formula of the product is in the vault and it just opens by the fingerprint of Harold so the king is led to believe that Harold is the boss, so he orders his men to go find him, and they cut off Sanchez's toe to show that nobody messes with them.

Harold leaves the hotel the exact night when his marriage is broke, he takes a taxi and leaves the next morning they have a flight to catch, Richard and Elaine wait for Harold but then they leave. Back at Promethium, Richard and Elaine promote their new product, a weed pill called Cannabax, to potential buyers Jerry (Played by Alan Ruck) and Marty (Played by Kenneth Choi). Elaine uses her sex appeal to sway the men into buying what she and Richard are selling. They get the contract done.

Meanwhile, the cartel goes looking for him, they find that he has left the hotel and is now staying at a smaller motel run by brothers Ronaldo (Played by Diego Catano) and Ernesto (Played by Rodrigo Corea). Sunny and Miles also live in the same motel, Harold later gets the brothers to help him make a phone call. He calls Richard but is actually pretending to be kidnapped in exchange for the ransom, he asks for 5 million dollars, and the two brothers gets excited about the amount, but Richard and Elaine cut him off because they are having sex in the bathroom, they were enjoying the deal which they have cracked, although they believe their business with the cartel is catching up to them and they are genuinely terrified.

To fix the situation, Richard tries to say that we should leave Harold but Elaine disagrees, so Richard calls his brother Mitch (Played by Sharlto Copley) who is in Heidi and Richard wants mitch to find Harold and bring him home back and he will pay him. Meanwhile, Angel is searching for Harold and asking all the taxi drivers about him.
Harold spends the evening getting drunk at a bar. The bartender is in league with the cartel, and he alerts the bosses when he recognizes Harold. The bartender makes him drunk and Harold tells everything about himself to the bartender. Two men show up to take Harold away, but he is too drunk to realize something is wrong. On the trip back to Villegas, Harold is able to understand them in Spanish when they say they got Harold. He also sees a gun that one of the man is holding. His vision is very blurry and can’t see properly to analyse it. Harold fights the man for the gun, he shoots the driver and sees that the car is about to crash so he wears the seat belt and the car goes off road.
One of Villegas's men that is Angel shows up to the motel to ask Ronaldo and Ernesto if they have seen Harold. They deny it at first but then become convinced to send him to Villegas if it means they will be rewarded. As they know the group’s name and it is very dangerous to lie to them.


 The next morning, Harold is in pain when he sees Sunny and Miles driving down the street. She orders Miles to stop, and they take Harold back to their room once he passes out. Sunny applies medicine on his wounds and calls him Harry. They have a beautiful conservation about life and Sunny wishes her that all good things will happen to you now.

Soon, Ronaldo and Ernesto (in masks) attempt to kidnap Harold and locks Sunny in the bathroom. Before they can get out the door, Mitch shows up and knocks the two of them out, he punches miles and takes Harold with him and informs him that Richard has sent him.
The same night Elaine goes to Richard's apartment building and sees him by his window with another woman. She just sees the shadows and can’t recognise them. She goes up and decides to confront him and finds that Richard is with Bonnie, whom Elaine knows is Harold's wife. Elaine says that that’s why you didn’t want to bring Harold back and also tells Bonnie about what he had said about your weight behind her back.

Elaine mentions that she had sex with Richard in the toilet of an airplane. This makes Bonnie angry and she slaps Richard and storms out of the house. Mitch takes Harold to the airport with the fake passports, but he runs away after thinking he's getting kidnapped again. Mitch catches him and takes him back to his room, where he gives an idea to Mitch to demand more money for the deal.

He injects Harold with a tracker to know where he is at all times. When Mitch calls Richard to make that deal, Richard informs him that the company is planning to collect a life insurance claim which is 5 million dollars on Harold if he were to end up dead.

Mitch decides to hunt Harold down. Harold and Mitch go out on the streets where they are spotted by Ronaldo and Ernesto. Mitch attempts to kill Harold and confesses everything, but he is not able to do it because he is very fond of him, as Harold prays to god that Mitch doesn’t shoot him, just then Mitch is struck by a car driven by the brothers, who take Harold with them to Villegas. Mitch falls in the lake.


The brothers take Harold to Villegas's territory where the king promptly has them both executed because he is a big fan of beatles and one of the brother said they don’t like it so king shot him dead.

Harold also saw Angel in king’s territory, King tells Harold not to worry as they only want access to the drug company's vault to take a surplus of the weed pill. They drive to the lab where Miles is meeting Roberto to take the product. Roberto makes a fake fire to bring Miles out of the lab, at the same time a huge shootout takes place when the police arrives, King’s people starts shooting, everyone ends up firing upon each other. Harold gets away with Angel, who reveals himself to be an undercover DEA agent and wants to bring down King and Promethium.

Meanwhile they are chased by the cartel members who run them off the road. Everyone is injured and a member shoots Angel, Harold shoots one of the member, while the other is shot by Mitch, who managed to track Harold in the nick of time. However, the first member is still alive and ends up shooting Mitch in the head, killing him, Harold kills the member in return.

Harold gives Angel his drive with the information he needs to bring Richard down. Harold also admits he can't return home since he won't have a job or wife to return to. Angel says people disappear in Mexico all the time, and that he will allow Harold to fake his death. Harold takes Mitch’s car, which has a ton of cash and fake passports.
Later, Celerino is found playing football with his kids, Villegas and his men, along with Miles, are all arrested. Harold is declared dead, and a funeral is held for him, which Bonnie attends. She later gets fat after being alone and poor. Richard is arrested and sentenced to 15 years, and Elaine takes over the company. While in prison, Richard receives a banana peel with the message "Dear Richard - Eat your carrots", letting Richard know that Harold is alive.
The movie ends with Harold staying in Mexico and opens up a bar by the beach. He messages Sunny on her birthday. The film closes with Harold smiling to the audience.
