Review: Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, an Indo-Japanese co-production, is a masterful adaptation of one of India’s most cherished epics. Originally released in 1993, the remastered version breathes new life into this animated classic, offering a vibrant portrayal that preserves the profound teachings and emotional depth of the original tale.

The animation format, as envisioned by creator Yugo Sako who has co-directed the film with Koichi Sasaki and Ram Mohan, eliminates the challenge of matching live-action actors with revered characters, making it a fitting medium for such a legendary tale. The visuals are striking, although some characters appear paler than their traditional depictions.

The film narrates the epic journey of Prince Rama (voiced by Nikhil Kapoor), who sets out to rescue his beloved wife, Sita (Rael Padamsee), from the demon king Ravana (Uday Mathan). Accompanied by his devoted brother Lakshman (Mishal Varma) and the loyal Hanuman (Noel Godin), Rama’s trials of love, honour, and sacrifice are beautifully portrayed. The movie explores deep themes of dharma (righteousness), loyalty, and the eternal battle between good and evil, making it a perfect introduction to the Ramayana for a global audience.

Faithfulness to the spirit of the epic gives the film a timeless quality. Iconic moments—such as the Vanvaas of Ram, Sita, and Lakshman, Sita’s abduction by Ravana, the climactic battle, and Ram’s triumphant return to Ayodhya—are presented with attention to detail and emotional resonance. Each scene captures the essence of the story, offering a profound and engaging visual account of Lord Ram’s greatness and his journey.

The original dubbed version featured Bollywood actors, but the re-dubbed voices—though competent—lack the impact that could have enhanced the dialogues' emotional depth. Nevertheless, voiceovers by Nikhil Kapoor, Rael Padamsee, Uday Mathan, Mishal Varma and Noel Godin are respectful of the epic’s legacy.

While the storyline remains compelling, the animation might feel simplistic for adult viewers, and some sequences, such as the action scenes, miss the intense thrill that could have elevated the experience. However, for younger audiences and those unfamiliar with Indian culture, the straightforward visuals and narrative make the Ramayana accessible and engaging.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is a heartfelt and visually rich retelling of an ancient epic. Though it has minor flaws in animation and voice acting, its faithful spirit and universal themes ensure its enduring appeal. This adaptation is a wonderful way to reacquaint oneself—and introduce new generations—to one of the greatest stories ever told.
