In perhaps the most shocking twist of the 2025 MLB season thus far, Framber Valdez, the Astros' ace, is apparently on the move. The Giants are reportedly emerging as a contender to acquire the two-time All-Star in a blockbuster-type deal.
Astros to take big decisions
Framber Valdez, who has been an important cog in the rotation of the Astros for many years now, is reportedly on the trading block chiefly due to monetary reasons. The thirty-year-old left-hander will be paid $18 million this season, with free agency knocking on his door a year from now.
While the Astros are trying to weather quite a few expensive contracts while preparing for the future, some big decisions pose large questions. While selling Valdez now could give Houston a decent return in young talent, it also gives them salary flexibility for future moves.
Despite a slightly bumpy start to the 2025 campaign, Valdez is a frontline starter with postseason credentials, something very few pitchers on this market can flaunt.
"We love what Framber has done for us," the Astros executive reportedly said.
"But sometimes you have to make hard calls to keep the organisation strong long-term."Giants looking to make a splash
Meanwhile, the Giants' thirst for a championship arm that will revitalize their rotation. San Francisco has at least been in the mix during the early going this season, but doesn't have any real aces to confront the upper echelon of the National League.
That would change instantly if they could land Valdez. His deep-inning potential coupled with zone control and overwatch performances make him an ideal match on a team trying to get back to October arms.
Valdez and Logan Webb would then portend a menacing 1-2 punch in the league. But he won't come cheap: Houston will be nicked by prospects and perhaps some big-league-ready talent headed the other way.
A move that could reshape the season
Should a deal materialise, it would send tremors through both leagues. It would effectively mark the end of an era for the Astros as they wave goodbye to one of their most trusted workhorses. For the Giants, it will be an all-out push for the present.
But again, this is far from done, much less final, though trade talks are heating up, and Framber Valdez could be rocking orange and black fairly soon.
