Uttar Pradesh launches ‘Buffer Mein Safar Yojana’ to boost ecotourism and local livelihoods
As per the latest developments, the Uttar Pradesh Forest and Wildlife Department has launched the ‘Buffer Mein Safar Yojana,’ in a significant move to promote sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation in the region. As per this initiative, the buffer zones of tiger reserves will be turned into thriving ecotourism destinations while simultaneously empowering local communities. As per the reports, the said scheme will be implemented across key regions like Dudhwa, Pilibhit, and Lakhimpur Kheri—areas known for their biodiversity and proximity to Nepal. Other ecologically rich zones, including Sohagibarwa and Kartaniya Ghat, have also been included. Notably, Semrai Lake, a significant stopover for migratory birds, is being developed as part of the eco circuit, offering birdwatchers a chance to explore Uttar Pradesh’s lesser-known natural gems.Read more: Vietnam’s 10-year Golden Visa program: Key features, perks, and eligibilityWhat sets this initiative apart is its strong focus on community participation. Rather than bringing in external operators, the Forest Department is training local villagers to become tour guides, safari operators, cooks, and canteen staff.
These residents—many of whom were previously dependent on forest-based livelihoods—are now being offered sustainable income sources through tourism. It’s anticipated that this initiative will not only ensure that the local economy benefits directly from ecotourism, but will also help to promote a sense of ownership and responsibility towards wildlife conservation among the locals.

Reports add that a modern information centre has been set up at the Dudhwa Tiger that will enhance the experience of visitors by providing them insights into the region’s flora, fauna, and conservation efforts. Moreover, there will be educational tours and interpretive materials available with the aim to make wildlife safaris more meaningful, especially for school groups and families. The Buffer Mein Safar Yojana comes at a time when the demand for eco-friendly travel options is on the rise. By transforming buffer zones—traditionally seen as transition areas between human settlements and protected forests—into tourism hubs, the initiative not only eases pressure on core wildlife zones but also makes conservation a community-led effort.Read more: 10 weekend getaways in India under INR 5,000Officials are of the view that this model could significantly help to contribute to the state’s ambition of becoming a leading ecotourism destination in India. Moreover, the integrated approach of blending tourism, conservation, and employment, could serve as a blueprint for other states aiming to balance ecology with economy. As Uttar Pradesh starts a new chapter of nature-based tourism, ‘Buffer Mein Safar’ promises not just safaris through scenic wilderness, but a journey toward inclusive and sustainable development.
