U.S. Vice President JD Vance stirred a major diplomatic row by calling Chinese workers “peasants” during an interview with Fox News. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned Vance’s comments as 'ignorant and impolite'. In a sharp response, Xia Baolong, Director of China's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, hit back saying, “Let those peasants in the United States wail in front of the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization," per Reuters. Victor Gao, a prominent Chinese analyst and government advisor, reportedly also blasted Vance, proudly calling himself a descendant of peasants and warning that China is fully prepared to confront the U.S. if provoked.
