Episode 1129 recap: Saturn’s assault and Kuma’s tragic backstory

Saint Saturn appears in a fearsome, horned form, teleporting onto Egghead Island with black flames and lightning. Jewelry Bonney and Sanji rush in to attack, but Saturn effortlessly shrugs off their blows. With a single glare he unleashes a crushing concussive blast – Bonney is knocked back bleeding and screaming, and Sanji suffers a similar blow to the face. Luffy, still exhausted from using Gear 5 in the previous episode, is briefly saved by Franky, who pushes him out of the way of Saturn’s next strike.
With Bonney and Sanji incapacitated, Saturn uses a telekinetic force to pin Franky, Sanji, and Dr. Vegapunk to the ground. Holding Bonney aloft, Saturn sneers that her father Kuma was “born to be a slave” because of his forbidden Buccaneer bloodline. He taunts her further by ordering nearby Marines to train their guns on her head. Terrified, Bonney closes her eyes and retreats into Kuma’s memories – triggering a flashback that dominates the rest of the episode.
Young Bartholomew Kuma in the Sorbet Kingdom (One Piece anime). In Bonney’s memory, we see young Kuma’s life in the Sorbet Kingdom. Born to kind parents Clapp and Jane, Kuma’s peaceful childhood is shattered when their Buccaneer heritage is discovered. The Celestial Dragons enslave the family and separate Kuma from his mother. In a heartbreaking scene, Kuma is reunited with his father, only to learn that his mother has died in chains. Kuma’s father tries to comfort him by telling the legend of the Sun God Nika and performing a cheerful dance, but then a World Noble shoots Clapp dead right before Kuma’s eyes. The episode ends with young Kuma sobbing over the loss of his parents, setting the stage for more emotional backstory in coming episodes.

The God Valley incident – legendary pirates arrive at God Valley (One Piece manga). The preview for Episode 1130 is titled “A History Erased! God Valley of Despair”, and it teases a trip back to the infamous God Valley incident. Legendary pirates Gol D. Roger, Whitebeard, and even Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) appear in the trailer, alongside the Roger Pirates, Garp’s Marines, and the Rocks Pirates. In the manga, this 38-year-old flashback shows Roger and Garp reluctantly allying to stop Rocks D. Xebec’s crew during a Native Hunting Competition for World Nobles. Kuma’s memories have already hinted at these events, and Episode 1130 will likely dramatize this epic battle.
In the manga’s version of God Valley, Kuma and Revolutionary Ivankov seize the chaos to change their fate. As Marines and pirates clash, Kuma grabs the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi (Paw-Paw Fruit) – saving himself and teleporting about 500 fellow slaves to safety. (Big Mom likewise snatches the mythical Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu and later gives it to Kaido.) Ultimately, the alliance defeats the Rocks Pirates (Rocks Xebec perishes), but the World Government covers it all up. As Beebom explains, the World Nobles erase Roger’s heroics from history and even erase God Valley from maps – hence “History Erased” in the title.
In short, Episode 1130 is expected to delve deeper into Kuma’s backstory by showing the God Valley incident in full. Viewers can anticipate seeing how Kuma escaped slavery (via the Nikyu Nikyu fruit) and caught glimpses of Roger and other legends. This flashback ties together many plot threads: Kuma’s past, the emergence of his Paw-Paw powers, and why the World Government would want this history forgotten. Manga fans know there are more tragic revelations ahead, so get ready for another emotional ride.
