Presenting the bill, Rai stated that it seeks to define passport and travel document requirements for individuals entering and exiting India while granting specific powers to the Central government for immigration control.
However, the bill faced opposition from Congress MP Manish Tewari, who argued that it violates multiple fundamental rights under the Indian Constitution. "I rise to oppose the Immigration and Foreigners Bill under Rule 72(2) of the Lok Sabha rules of business. This bill is unconstitutional on multiple counts and infringes upon fundamental rights," Tewari stated.
TMC MP Sougata Roy also voiced his opposition, stating that existing laws already govern the entry and exit of foreigners. "There are already four laws in place for this purpose. This bill is unnecessary," he said.
The proposed legislation grants the Central government authority over immigration policies, including passport and visa regulations, foreigner registration, and other related matters.
The second part of the budget session of Parliament, which began on Monday, will continue until April 4.
