Bathinda: Punjab local govt minister Dr Ravjot Singh set aside his official duties on Tuesday to save the life of an elderly man who collapsed at a public event in Bathinda.
The incident occurred during a "naksha mela"— a month-long site plan distribution drive organised by the Bathinda municipal corporation. The event, aimed at handing over property site plans to owners, was being held in the presence of Ravjot Singh, MLA from Sham Chaurasi in Hoshiarpur, alongside mayor Padamjit Singh Mehta and other civic officials.
While interacting with attendees, Ravjot Singh noticed an elderly man collapse on the stairs and lose consciousness. Reacting swiftly, the doctor-turned-politician rushed to the man's aid and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a critical first-aid procedure used during cardiac arrest to maintain circulation to the brain and vital organs. He also massaged the man's hands and feet in an effort to stimulate circulation.
The man regained consciousness and was later transported to a hospital for further care.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Ravjot Singh, who holds an MD in medicine, said, "Saving lives is always a priority. Even in public service, I carry my medical training with me. I believe every young person should be trained in basic first aid—it can make all the difference in emergencies."
