COIMBATORE: Residents of Peelamedu and surrounding areas have demanded that a new railway station be established near Tidel Park on the Hope College Road.
RTI activist V Balasubramanian represented the residents and petitioned the district collector to build a new railway station opposite to Tidel Park.
He said, "A new railway station will benefit around 14,000 people working in Tidel Park. It will also benefit visitors to the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex."
He said the 70-year-old Peelamedu railway station has no proper transport facilities. “Peelamedu railway station is not easily accessible as it is located around 2 km north of the bus stop. There are no buses to the railway station. Rarely do auto come by to drop the passengers,” he said.
He said the road to Peelamedu railway station is narrow. There are encroachments along the road.
“Many people aren't aware of this railway station since there is no signboard on the Avinashi Road. Also, only a few trains stop here. This railway station is used mainly for loading and unloading goods, especially steel rods," he said.
Welcoming the suggestion of building a new station on the Hope College Road, a faculty member in a private institution near Peelamedu said, “I've to travel from Tirupur, and my best option is to travel by train. But due to the accessibility issue and the unsafe atmosphere at Peelamedu station, I always opt to travel by bus. So, establishing a new railway station is a good idea. The area has ample space, streetlights, surveillance and transport facilities."
