Bomb threats meant to distract forces, says Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner
Thiruvananthapuram: Amid the ongoing investigation into the hoax bomb threats in the city, police commissioner Thomson Jose IPS informed TOI that the threats appeared to be part of a deliberate attempt to disrupt law enforcement agencies. However, he stressed that the true motive behind the threats could only be revealed after a thorough investigation.Jose explained that the threats were issued in areas where security measures were not fully equipped to handle potential bomb threats, suggesting that the intent could be to confuse and divert the attention of enforcement agencies. While the exact motive remains unclear, the fact that the threats were placed in zones with limited security could indicate a strategic effort to create chaos. He also mentioned that if the goal was to plant bombs, the perpetrators wouldn't have needed to create such distractions, as they could directly place the explosives. The investigation revealed that the threatening emails were sent through servers based in the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Sweden, and the United States, using Hotmail accounts. These encrypted emails were sent using anonymous browsers, making it difficult to trace the origin of the threats. Attempts to obtain account holder details from Microsoft were rejected. The police have since approached the additional chief judicial magistrate court, requesting an order for Microsoft to disclose the necessary information. So far, 15 hoax threats have been received, originating from Hotmail accounts such as [email protected], [email protected], and others.
