WWE superstar Asuka is reportedly on the verge of making her long-awaited return to the ring, nearly a year after suffering a serious knee injury. The decorated performer, known as the “Empress of Tomorrow,” last appeared on WWE television in May 2024 at Backlash: France, where she and tag team partner Kairi Sane lost the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships to Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill.
It was later revealed that Asuka had been wrestling through a knee issue leading into the match, an injury that eventually required surgery and extensive rehabilitation. As a result, she missed several high-profile events over the past year, including WrestleMania 41. WWE officials have kept her status under wraps, but multiple sources now indicate her return could happen as early as May 2025.
WWE keeping comeback plans under wraps
Reports from PWNexus have suggested that Asuka’s return could take place following the Backlash premium live event on May 10. WWE is believed to be taking a cautious approach with her recovery, avoiding any official statements to preserve the surprise element that often accompanies her reappearances.
Interestingly, Asuka’s name appeared in a teaser clip from Netflix’s upcoming behind-the-scenes series WWE Unreal, where an early draft of the WrestleMania 41 match card showed her listed for the show. Although she wasn’t ultimately cleared to perform, the mention suggests the company had been preparing for a potential comeback months in advance.

Fightful Select reported earlier this year that creative plans, including a tag team match were discussed for her return but weren’t implemented due to timing. It’s unclear if WWE still intends to go that route or pivot to a solo storyline.
Asuka is still listed on WWE’s Raw roster and remains affiliated with the Damage CTRL faction. However, the group itself has struggled with injury setbacks, including Kairi Sane and Dakota Kai, casting doubt on whether the faction will remain intact upon Asuka’s return.
During her absence, Asuka also spoke out on fan safety concerns, saying WWE and parent company TKO were taking measures to ensure her well-being at live events. The comment sparked discussions around wrestler safety, and drew support from fans across the globe.
With May already here and Backlash approaching, all eyes are on WWE’s programming as speculation grows. Will Asuka make a surprise return? The WWE Universe is watching, and waiting.
