NEW DELHI: The car involved in an accident that killed two persons in west Delhi's Janakpuri on Thursday was being driven at over 100 kmph. This was more than double the speed limit for the stretch, police said.
The accused driver, who was returning from a party in Gurgaon and was allegedly drunk, ignored repeated pleas from his friend in the front passenger seat to slow down before losing control of the vehicle and killing two persons. The driver was identified as Harsh,19, a resident of Dwarka's Pochanpur. He was in search of a dhaba at the time of the accident.
"The friend told us that he repeatedly asked Harsh not to go so fast, but the latter kept speeding and lost control entirely. The vehicle first hit a cycle and then swerved into the shanty. No charges have been filed against the friend so far," an officer said.
The accident occurred around 3.30am when the speeding car hit a bicycle carrying Aneesh Ansari (45) and his co-worker Kuldeep (28). Ansari was declared dead at the hospital, while Kuldeep sustained serious injuries. The vehicle did not stop there and ploughed into a roadside shanty, where Phool Singh (35), his pregnant wife Soni Devi (33), and their five-year-old nephew Vishal were asleep. While Singh died on the spot, his wife and the child are in critical care at a private hospital in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.
"The driver was caught by local residents. A medical examination confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol," deputy commissioner of police (West) Vichitra Veer said.
