VIJAYAWADA: Police in Tenali town have arrested three people accused of assaulting a police constable last month in
Andhra Pradesh's Ithanagar.
However, the arrest has sparked controversy after a video emerged showing the accused being made to sit on the ground while police personnel beat them on their feet. The footage quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.
The accused — Chebrolu John Victor (25), Shaik Babulal (21), and Doma Rakesh (25) — are alleged to be close associates of a known rowdy-sheeter named Laddu.
According to Tenali Two Town Police official Ramulu Naik, the incident occurred nearly a month ago when the trio, along with another individual identified as 'Killer', allegedly attacked Constable Kanna Chiranjeevi while under the influence of ganja. The constable was reportedly hospitalised following the assault. A case was subsequently registered based on his complaint.
Police arrested the accused on Sunday and produced them before court, after which they were sent to judicial remand.
The video triggered a range of public responses. While some expressed support for the police action, citing the criminal background of the accused, others raised concerns over the legality and ethics of such public punishment by law enforcement.
Ramulu Naik stated that all three accused have criminal histories. Victor is said to have nine cases against him, including charges of attempt to murder. Rakesh has six pending cases, including similar serious charges, and Babulal was involved in the current case of assault on the constable.
